Composition Writing Workshop

The “Composition Writing: A Visual, Dramatic, and Creative Approach” Workshop is a one-session workshop that aims to expose educators/students to a fun and engaging way of composing a story.

Targeted Audience

·      Students aged 10–12; or

·      Educators/Caregivers of children in the above age group

Description

In this highly interactive, 3-hour workshop, participants will be introduced to the story writing process through the use of visual aids, dramatic enactment, and creative visualisation.

Participants, working in small groups, will compose a story, under the trainers guidance:

·      Part 2. Creative visualisation: Composing evocative descriptions of characters and settings through re-enactment

"The ABCs of Essay Writing" Workshop

ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOP

“The ABCs of Essay Writing” Workshop comprises one 3-hour workshop, with the option of adding a guided writing workshop. In the latter workshop, participants apply their learning from the previous workshop to their own writings.

Targeted Audience

Secondary and Junior College Students

Description

This workshop focuses on the four different types of essays narrative, expository, argumentative, and analytical that secondary school and junior college students are expected to write.

·      Part 1: One of the best ways to become good at something is to learn from the best. Through an exploratory comparison of four well-written versions of four types of essays, participants will achieve an in-depth understanding of the unique characteristics of each type of essay.

·      Part 2: We will then delve into the writing craft that will enable participants to produce each type of essay.

Writing craft revolves around tiny building blocks of academic writing: the organisation of paragraphs, the formulation of sentences, and the choice of words. Using excerpts from the four well-written versions of four types of essays, we will address the following areas.

§  Textual Unity: Organisation of paragraphs
§  Formulation of Sentences: Functional Purpose of Grammar
§  Writing Voice: Word Choice, Syntax (Word Order), Writing Tone, Active vs. Passive Voice, & Word Play (Verbal Wit)
§  Revision: Making Your Writing Shine
